Asquith Boys charity concert in support of the RFDS
This year’s concert in aid of the Royal Flying Doctor Service was a wonderful success with a large crowd in attendance. Terry Clark (RFDS South Eastern Section board member) and Mary Bentley (RFDS volunteer speaker) spoke to the audience at interval and thanked the school and the community for the tremendous support shown on the night.
Mary spoke of the unique partnership between Asquith Boys School and the RFDS, where not only do Asquith Boys raise funds but they are also taught in History, English and Visual Arts classes about the importance of the RFDS in regional and outback Australia and how, in Year 11 Engineering Studies, through the assistance of the Bankstown Airport Base for RFDS, our boys learn about aeronautical engineering by studying planes used in the service. This is a partnership seen nowhere else in the NSW School System.
The evening had a wonderful atmosphere and encouraged our young and upcoming musicians. Hornsby Heights Public School Senior Band was scintillating and a credit to their school. Asquith Boys High School Stage Band was again outstanding.
A highlight of the evening was John Morrison’s Swing City Big Band and their stunningly lively performance of classic jazz, featuring one of Australia’s prima singers Jacki Cooper – her rendition of Georgia was inspiring. John Morrison played the hall during his drum solo; John hopped out from behind the drums and proceeded to rattle his sticks on everything in sight: stairs, stands, doors and heads (including mine).
