Glamorous fundraising at Broken Hill Ball
There were plenty of glamorous frocks, tuxedos and dinner jackets at the annual Women’s Auxiliary Ball in Broken Hill on Friday 2 May.
This year’s ball coincided with Agfair, a biennial agricultural field event that brings thousands of people from outlying areas into Broken Hill for the weekend. Over 400 people partied the night away at the Women’s Auxiliary Ball, helping to raise over $25,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
There were plenty of interesting prizes in the hotly contested auction, including a whole pig that went for $1,000. The pig was promptly donated back and re-auctioned for another $850. One of the most glamorous items was a necklace modelled on the night by Miss Australia finalist Sonia Lipski, which fetched $800. Another Miss Australia finalist Victoria Letheby performed a solo dance display.
The food provided by Ken and Carol Holden was fabulous, local band Chrissy Murphy and Highway 32 played all night and the basketball court was transformed into a glamorous tribute to the RFDS, thanks to the hard work and creative vision of Sancha Treloar.
Newly elected president Coral Ford was helped in the organisation of the ball by many people, most notably Secretary Olwyn Reynolds and treasurer Dorothy O’Connor. “I want to thank all the members of the committee and all the many volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the ball such a success,” says Coral.
