The Outback Car Trek has been running for 19 years. It is the biggest - and the noisiest and the dirtiest! - fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (South Eastern Section). It regularly raises over $1 million each year.
What is most remarkable about the Flying Doctor Outback Trek is the mutual generosity and respect that is fostered between the Trekkers and the remote communities that the Trek passes through. The towns people spend days preparing their finest local produce and come from all around to ensure the 300 Trek participants are watered, fed and warmly welcomed in their home town. In turn the Trekkers not only bolster these communities with their support of the RFDS but they dig their hands deep in their own pockets to support local fundraising, helping remote schools pay for trips to the snow and supporting community projects along the way.
The binding element in the Outback Trek is Stephen Knox OAM who with his lovely wife Jill organise the event in a supreme fashion that allows the Trekkers to take a break from their busy work and family lives to relax and have fun with their colourful cars and even more colourful mates.
